About

What is this website, and why is it here?

This website exists because I like flags, and we all need to know what is the best flag and what is the worst flag. I store the results of the flag battles in a database, and I'll reveal the winners and losers periodically with fun infographics and automatically at flag rankings.

How does it work? Who votes? And how often?

You vote, through individual flag battles, and you vote as many times as you like. Because the more you care the more you'll vote. The results will be perfectly scientific, democratic, legally binding, and morally potent.

When does the flag war end?

It never ends. Every month I'll reveal the flag with the highest winning percentage. Every year there will be the biggest winner. The same goes for the losing flags.

What flags will compete?

Almost any and all flags can go up. I'll even put up flags designed by users if you provide a modest donation (or if your flag is subjectively amazing). This is a site for all flags to compete: country flags, historical flags, city flags, flags for languages, somnivexillological flags (whatever that is), Cyprusized flags of North Carolina's 12th congressional district.

What is a flag? What is a good flag? What is a bad flag?

There are excellent online references on flags, their purposes, and what makes a good flag design. The Portland Flag Association has a good page on Good Flag vs. Bad Flag and they in turn reference the North American Vexillology Association (NAVA). Here are their five rules for making a good flag.

  1. Keep It Simple. The flag should be so simple that a child can draw it from memory…
  2. Use Meaningful Symbolism. The flag’s images, colors, or patterns should relate to what it symbolizes…
  3. Use 2 or 3 Basic Colors. Limit the number of colors on the flag to three which contrast well and come from the standard color set…
  4. No Lettering or Seals. Never use writing of any kind or an organization’s seal…
  5. Be Distinctive or Be Related. Avoid duplicating other flags, but use similarities to show connections…

I'd add the following rules to the above.

  1. Break the rules, just be careful. In order to be distinctive, you may need to break some of the rules. Don't break all of the rules, unless your goal is a bad flag.
  2. Symbolism is symbolism, not representation. This is another rule you can break, but a flag isn't necessarily a map of your country/region.

The Flag Of The World(FOTW) database provides a great place to look up flags. Wikipedia and Wikimedia commons offer a large number of flag images available in the public domain. Most of the flags from this site come from here.

Finally, you can learn more about flags from the Reddit communities that explore them in too much detail. These include r/vexillology, r/vexillologycirclejerk, r/somnivexillology, r/eyehurtingflags, and even r/accidentallyliberian.

How will this site support itself?

I'm looking for a flag selling affiliate. Feel free to contact me. You can also enter your flag into the flag battle for a small price (idk how much, depends on how awesome your flag is).

The flagwar will only end when time itself merges back into the godhead.
